Big Story 2: Bill Weevil and the Purple Egg

I got enough responses saying that the Cherry family story felt finished, and I was eager to start a new one, that I decided it was time to move on.

This time, I am going to start the story myself, then readers take it from there. I will introduce a character with a flaw, a dream and an "inciting incident". That's screenwriter talk for a thing that pops up in a character's life that forces them to change. It's what throws the character into their adventure.

The other difference is, this time around I am going to start with a title. So, here goes. I present to you...

Bill Weevil and the Purple Egg

Chapter 1

This is Bill Weevil. He is a very lonely Weevil. He doesn't have very many friends and he spends a lot of time at home by himself. That's why Bill Weevil is usually very, very bored.

His favorite thing to do is sit in his favorite chair and read books about Australia. Bill has always wanted to visit Australia, but poor Bill is afraid of riding airplanes. Planes go way too high for Bill.

Bill Weevil kept on being bored and lonely and afraid of planes, and reading books about Australia in his favorite chair. Then one night he found something on his front step.

It was a purple egg.

"What's this?" Bill wondered. It was the biggest, purplest egg he had ever seen. He stared at it for a long time, trying to decide what he should do with it.

What happens next?

  • Does Bill take the egg inside?

  • How does he care for it?

  • Does it hatch?

  • What's inside? Is it good or bad?

  • Does what's inside scare Bill?

  • What does Bill do about it?

  • Does the thing in the egg think Bill is its mamma?

And what about Bill?

  • Why is he afraid of flying?

  • What does he do for work?

  • What does he think is so special about Australia?

  • Is there something that happened in Bill's past that made him the way he is?

Please submit answers, drawings and any ideas here. I can't wait to see your responses!
